Telecasters are well loved for their playability and we found the Squier Affinity Telecaster had these same qualities. The neck pickup sounded warm and round, while the bridge pickup had plenty of bite when paired with a classic British tube amp such as a Vox AC30. These pickups aren’t the best, not being as defined and sharp as you’d find in a more expensive guitar, but for the price they do a very convincing job of recreating that classic Telecaster sound. Paired with the two single coil humbuckers this results in a very clear, sharp sound.

The body is made from solid maple, a tonewood used for its bright tone and clarity. The Squier Affinity Telecaster certainly sounds and feels like a Telecaster. When paired with a distorted amp, twang and sharp bite makes them very popular amongst punk and rockabilly players. Their bright, crisp tone lends itself very well to country and blues style clean tones. Telecasters are sought after for their unique sound. The maple fretboard was well crafted and the fretwork was pretty good, with no obvious mistakes or sharp edges.Ī pleasant surprise for a guitar in this price range. A particular surprise considering that most guitars in this price range are made from cheap basswood or reformed wood. The body is solid alder – the same as you’d find on a true Fender Telecaster, and the neck is made from solid maple. It is made from surprisingly good tonewoods, considering it is a $200 guitar. The polyurethane finish was very well done for a guitar in this price range, and the three ply pickguard looks just like what you’d find on a genuine Fender.

We played the Butterscotch Blonde finish guitar and loved the way it looked, full of vintage charm and looking every bit the part of a classic Telecaster. The Squier Affinity Telecaster has the same classic shape that Teles have used since the ‘50s, with its single cutaway and iconic headstock with the two color logo and classic Fender typeface. How does Squier’s Affinity Telecaster measure up, considering its $200 price tag? Squier is a subsidiary of Fender that produces faithful copies of Fender classics at a much more affordable price. It is used by notable artists across a wide range of genres, from Bruce Springsteen to The Clash’s Joe Strummer to Slipknot’s Jim Root.Ī true sonic chameleon, you’re as likely to see a Telecaster in the hands of a country guitarist as a punk rocker. However, the Telecaster is anything but a relic and is still one of the most popular models of guitar to this day. Initially released in 1950, it was the first mass produced solid body electric guitar and provided many of the design foundations we see on guitars to this day, including bolt on necks and pickup control wiring. The original Fender Telecaster is often referred to as the “godfather” of electric guitars.
